Volunteering

We live in a world with an emphasis on the self, and an apparent rejection of long-term commitment. Is volunteering a thing of the past?

Far from it! Volunteering is vital to Scripture Union's ethos and existence. From its earliest days, when most of the work was done by professional and business people in their spare time, to today's SU worldwide family of people from all walks of life in over 130 countries, God's mission continues to be worked out through SU volunteers.

"Scripture Union is a community of staff and volunteers, united by a shared task, (helping children, young people and families respond to the good news of Jesus), and a shared spirituality, (practising and encouraging others in daily Bible reading and prayer)."

What about you? As a volunteer with Scripture Union, you can experience this community, a sense of achievement, the buzz of being part of a team and the possibility of using different gifts and skills to those used in other areas of life.

In particular, you'll be getting alongside children and young people as their faith is stretched, challenged and deepened.

You can volunteer for a day a week, a week in the year, a year in your life. Whichever it is, you'll receive excellent, relevant, training.

I have now been on a total of seven Scripture Union camps; I've been both a camper and a junior leader. I thought the camps I went on were so amazing that I wanted to give other people that experience by becoming a volunteer.

I know my group thought that with my grey hair I might be a bit old fashioned but they soon persuaded me to sleep out under the stars... but I was saved by a change in the weather!

I joined the team to help with teaching the children but God taught me more than I ever expected
