...right at this moment!
For some time now, Scripture Union Queensland (in partnership with local churches) has taken advantage of government policy that has allowed Christian chaplains to operate in public (government) schools. SU has seen God move in unbelievable ways in the lives of young people through this fabulous ministry. Since its inception in 1990, school chaplaincy in Queensland has grown to 200 chaplains. These Chaplains have provided a frontline defense for students against sometimes overwhelming situations.
Today, the dedicated force of over 250 chaplains and support staff - and more than 1,500 volunteers - assist young people right across the state through a range of programs.
School Chaplains are in the prevention and rescue business - helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, depression and suicide. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis and those who just need a friend. | ![]() |
Late last year, the Australian Federal Government recognised the significant contribution that chaplains (who are totally funded by their local communities) are making in caring and supporting children and young people. In order to increase their impact, the government announced that they would contribute 125 million dollars towards this work.
This is an incredibly bold initiative and one that has raised a great deal of controversy. However, the government has been resolute in stating that a holistic education for Australian children cannot ignore the spiritual dimension of their lives.
The response from schools wanting access to this funding has been overwhelming. The end result is that in Queensland alone, SU Queensland will have around 500 school chaplains within the next six months.
